Fill a meter and Apex Legends switches to a third-person camera and hands you a Hadoken. That's the pitch of Apex Legends VS Street Fighter 6, an Apex Legends event that went live on September 22 at 10am PT (5pm UTC) and runs until October 13.

It's a strange idea for a battle royale. Having read how it works, I think it's the right kind of strange.

How Fighter Form works in the Apex Legends event

The event runs inside a Street Fighter version of Wildcard. You choose Fighter Gear based on one of four characters: Ryu, Chun-Li, Akuma or Dhalsim. Each kit has its own passive, tactical and ultimate built around that character's signature moves.

Tokens are scattered around the map. Picking them up fills your Fight Gauge, and a full gauge unlocks Fighter Form. The camera moves to third person, your melee gets stronger, you can block, you take less damage, you move faster, and you get your fighter's full move set. Hadoken, Shoryuken, Yoga Sunburst and Kikosho are all in there.

So the fight becomes about token control. A team that loots tokens fast gets Fighter Form first, and a squad in Fighter Form with extra damage resistance is going to beat a squad that isn't. I expect the first few days to look like token races, with people rotating to wherever the pickups spawn. That's more interesting than another limited mode where the only change is the loot table.

Olympus gets the arcade treatment

Olympus has been remixed for the event. Luke's Gym takes over as a point of interest, and the map now has Punch Trucks you can smash, arcade cabinets, Blanka-chan balloons and fighter statues. It's a costume more than a new layout, but Olympus has always suited a colorful theme.

Every skin in the event

Eight Iconic skins pair Legends with Street Fighter 6 characters:

  • Sparrow as Ryu
  • Alter as Chun-Li
  • Bangalore as Elena
  • Mirage as Luke
  • Gibraltar as Akuma
  • Wattson as Cammy
  • Caustic as Blanka
  • Pathfinder as Dhalsim

Caustic as Blanka is the obvious winner. Some pairings match on personality and some just match on silhouette, and that one does both.

There are also eight Legendary weapon skins. Here the sources disagree. EA's own announcement lists the R-99, EVA-8, Flatline, Volt, G7 Scout, Mozambique, Sentinel and Peacekeeper. Some third-party coverage lists the Devotion where EA lists the Sentinel. I'd go with EA's list, but check the in-game store before spending anything on a Devotion skin that may not exist.

The top item is a Hadoken Mythic Universal Melee with a matching deathbox. The event also has its own currency, Zenny, which you earn to unlock cosmetics. No source I found listed real-money prices for the skins or bundles.

How to get the free Twitch charm

Twitch Drops run from September 22 to 29. Link your EA account and watch any Apex Legends stream for 60 minutes to get the Insert Coin Here weapon charm.
