You can now reload in Counter-Strike 2 without making a sound. Hold the Reload key and the reload goes quiet, at the cost of taking longer. It's the biggest mechanical change in the Rush Hour CS2 update, which Valve shipped on September 22 (September 23 UTC, build 1.41.8.2).

For a game where footsteps and reload clicks are half your information, that's a big deal.

Silent reloads and silent unscoping

Reload noise has always told you something. An enemy reloading behind a box is a free peek. Now a smart player can reload after a kill without broadcasting it, and the person who used to punish that sound has to guess.

What Valve hasn't said is exactly how much slower a silent reload is. The official notes describe it as slower and give no number. Coverage I found says "a few seconds longer," but nobody has published a precise figure, so I'd treat any exact number going around as unverified until someone tests it. A follow-up round of fixes suggests Valve is still tuning the animation, including left-handed viewmodels, third-person models that animated too fast during silent reloads, and the first-person Dual Berettas reload.

Unscoping from a scoped weapon is silent now too. AWPers holding an angle can back off without giving themselves away, and I think that's the more quietly important change of the two.

Rush, the new 3v3 mode

Rush is a queued 3v3 mode. Teams move through randomly picked combat arenas, win each round by holding a central tower or wiping the other team, and try to push all the way to the opponent's castle. Valve's notes also mention leaderboards among your friends.

It sounds closer to a party mode than a Premier replacement, and that's fine. CS2 has needed something between a full competitive match and a deathmatch warmup.

Premier map picks replace bans

Premier map selection used to ban down to one map. Now teams pick maps instead. Valve's notes say the teams choose four maps together and the game launches one of them at random. Dust2.us describes the order as Team 1 picks one, Team 2 picks two, then Team 1 picks one more. Another write-up simplifies it to "each team picks two." Both land on four maps and a random draw, so the difference is only how the picks are split.

I like this change. Ban-down let every lobby funnel toward the same comfort map. A random draw from four means you need at least a few maps you can actually play.

Crosshairs, clan tags and the chickens

Crosshairs are now measured in pixels, so they look the same at any resolution, and they have their own Crosshair/Scopes tab in settings. New options include a half outline and a static square style. The minimum dynamic spread is down to 64 pixels, and a bug that ignored a gap width of 0 is fixed. Dust2.us reports the default crosshair is now a new style called Dynamic Quad.

Clan tags are back for anyone in a Steam Community Group, and they now show in the kill feed. You can put stickers on the C4. Bullet decals and blood are easier to read, and the halftime scoreboard now shows the right stats. Valve also lists gap and clipping fixes on Mirage, Ancient, Train and Cache.

And then the chickens. Chickens can now be hit by the Zeus x27, and chicken eggs have been added as weekly reward drops. Several YouTube videos also call this a "pets" update, but I couldn't find pets anywhere in Valve's notes. So far the eggs are confirmed and the pets aren't.

Early complaints about the CS2 update

Reddit threads from the first day include players saying they were VAC-banned for no reason and that menu sensitivity broke after the patch. These are unconfirmed user reports, not anything Valve has acknowledged. We've flagged shaky CS2 patch dating before, in our BLAST Open Porto and patch history write-up, so check Valve's own notes before trusting a secondhand claim.

How do you silent reload in CS2?

Hold down the Reload key. The reload makes no sound but takes longer than a normal reload. Valve has not published the exact extra time.

How does Premier map selection work after the Rush Hour update?

Bans are gone. Teams pick four maps between them and the game launches one of the four at random.

What is Rush mode in CS2?

Rush is a queued 3v3 mode where teams fight through randomly chosen arenas, winning rounds by holding a tower or eliminating the other team, until one side reaches the opponent's castle.

Are pets in the CS2 Rush Hour update?

Not according to Valve's notes. Chicken eggs were added as weekly reward drops and chickens can now be hit by the Zeus x27, but pets are only mentioned in creator videos.
